Recreation Updates...

Living Histories

In partnership with the North Shore Volunteers, Inglewood residents have begun a seven week program to celebrate The Year of the Older Adult by  documenting their biographical histories for personal and familial keepsakes. At the end of this period, and with written consent, these histories may be summarized and submitted for publication. The interviewer for these histories is Victoria Hogan.

Saying Goodbye...

Over the summer we have been fortunate to have a talented group of students lead our Friendship Program in fun and innovative ways. Two of these students are from Capilano College in the Music Therapy Program and two from UBC in the sciences. With music, conversation, and imagination, this program provided meaning, socialization and memories that enriched the lives of our residents. We wish these students every success in their future endeavors.

Pen Pals...

From our sister facility in Alberta, we received a letter from the Brentwood Buddies asking if we would kindly like to correspond via the post. What a wonderful idea to find out how others think, feel and experience living in long term care, not only in other parts of the country, but other parts of the world as well. If there are other facilities interested, we would love to hear from you...

Our Tropical Luau...

...was as exotic as it gets without the real thing. Our residents were able to experience the Hula of Hawaii, the Limbo of the Caribbean and the Macarena of South America. We were greeted with leis, sipped on a Chi Chi, and snacked on Pineapple Hors d'oeuvres. Our craft programs were largely responsible in providing much of the décor for this occasion. We highly recommend a repeat of this program!

Music Therapy...

Research has well documented the benefits of music therapy in helping to alleviate relocation stress, minimizing depression, increasing self expression and reducing anxiety and agitation associated with progressive dementia. These are but a few. Inglewood is proud to announce the inclusion of music therapy to the therapy services team beginning in September. We would like to welcome Sally-Ann Cushenan, a graduate who comes to us with years of experience. Stay "tuned"...

The Resident's Council General Annual Meeting

On Monday, August 30, 1999, the Resident's Council will be holding its 3rd general annual meeting and elections. Over the 1998/1999 period:

Arising from feedback of many new residents, a Welcome Committee was formed to help promote feelings of acceptance, comfort and security to people adapting to a new setting. This committee is comprised of resident volunteers who visit newcomers with a welcoming package of facility information, recreation calendars, gift certificates, and an invitation to tea.
Council approved the purchase of a cell phone that would accompany residents on bus trips should emergency communication be necessary.
Council members hosted it's first staff appreciation Christmas Party (Christmas 1998). In attendance members gave out chocolate treats that were overwhelmingly appreciated.
Support has been provided to Management and the Family Advisory Committee in their advocacy efforts to change the existing unfair practice of transferring residents away from Inglewood, instead of giving them some priority for our extended and special care units. As it stands now, their name must be added to an steadily increasing provincial waiting list.
The bazaar in the fall of 1998 earned $ 1,685.00
Through requests via the Council, the following actions have been undertaken by the Leadership Teams:
    • admittance to the building through patio entrances are restricted - except for emergencies
    • the use of name tags were made mandatory
    • the practice of meal announcement re-established
Donations of three china cabinets were made by the Councils request. Each lounge now houses the tea cups previously donated by the residents and their families.
Purchase of a new mixing board and two cordless microphones were added to the existing PA system.
Council supported Volunteer Appreciation with funds for gifts.
A donation of $350.00 was given to the Caring Ministry for its contributions to the facility and community.
An increase of $1.00 will be charged to Bus Trips leaving the North Shore.
A new bus driver was located and the total hours approved by the Council for outings - which are 4 hours per week.
A collaborative effort by the Resident Council and The Celebration Team will result in the publication of a Cook Book. Recipes are currently being collected from staff, residents and their families, and should be ready to sell at this years bazaar in November.

Celebration Team Updates

The Celebration Team is currently looking for innovative, committed individuals, who are concerned with increasing staff morale, celebrating individual and team successes and organizing seasonal events. We are looking for a long commitment with opportunities to gain experience from a variety of tasks.

In our efforts to make this team financially independent, we are embarking on a number of fundraising adventures. In November a Cook Book will be published and ready for sale. In addition, the team approved a monthly 50/50 draw to be held on the last Friday of every month. Keep an eye out for posters!

September has been targeted for the garage sale -- the date has yet to be determined.

If anyone has any fundraising ideas, please do not hesitate to forward them to the Celebration Team...
