| Staff on our
laundry team range in height from 4’10” to 5’9”, yet the equipment they use
to do their work comes in standardized sizes.
Marta, Kian, Caroline, Demi and Lena spend 90% of their day standing at a
table, either folding laundry or pressing name labels onto clothing. Working
for extended periods at levels too high or too low puts strain on the lower
back and legs and/or on the upper back, resulting in muscle overextension
with pain and even decreased mobility. Chris, from our support services
team, took on the challenge of finding a way that several employees of
different heights could work comfortably at the same work station. Chris
attached the base of one of our dining room tables (which can be raised or
lowered with a crank handle under the table), under the laundry folding
table and - voila - he created a laundry folding table which can be raised
on lowered to the comfort level of the person using it. Way to go Chris!!
Simple, easy to do, cost effective and ergonomically “work safe”. |

Gerry spends 15% of his day pushing a cart filled with 125 to 175 pounds of
soiled laundry, back and forth over 660 feet of carpeted hallways. Gerry was
sure that the cart could be adapted to a height, so that it would be at a
“ergonomically work safe level" for everyone who uses it, regardless of
their height. Height adjustable carts are available commercially but are
prohibitively expensive. Larry, from support services, got a gleam in his
eye. He attached the handles and bolts from an old adjustable walker to the
laundry cart and solved the problem.
At Inglewood Care Centre, we are all so proud of the initiative and
ingenuity shown by Larry and Chris. We thank you, and our backs thank you.
We’re impressed, we’re proud, and we’re thankful. Thanks for listening and
caring guys. | |
