October 1999
By Brenda McEwan Influenza Update
Nurse Acknowledging evidence-based reports that the incidence of influenza among residents of long term care facilities is strongly related to the level of immunization of the staff of those same long term care facilities. Inglewood launched a campaign to increase the number of staff participating in our influenza vaccination program.

Government on Influenza and Flu Vaccination

Awareness-raising:

clipped a one page information sheet from the region's medical health officer to every punch card (employees time card)

posted information about the vaccine and about the process by which exposed staff pass influenza to our immonu-compromised residents at the punch clock, in each staff room, and at every nursing station.

addressed the importance of participation at our September general staff meeting

Facilitation and implementation:

made clinic times easily accessible for all staff, regardless of their shift

Conclusion:Appears to bear out the contention that a higher immunization rate amongst staff supports a lower infection rate amongst residents.

Note:Inglewood Care Centre had no reported cases of influenza, and no residents with influenza signs and symptoms!

Note of interest: -- we also vaccinated (persons who were in the facility but not employees)

4 volunteers
1 hairdresser
1 lab tech
1 supplier's rep/educator
7 (practicum) resident care aide students
1 agency care aide
