“What could be nicer than a relaxing, warm bath or a long, hot shower?
Just about anything if you have dementia.

The Upper Terrace Bathing Rooms Project At-A-Glance

Did you know?

Bathing is often a stressful experience for people with dementia.

Caregivers find giving baths or showers one of the most difficult aspects of care giving.

“My Mom was always so anxious on bath day.
I’m convinced if the room had been pretty, with
interesting things to look at, and if Mom felt more private
her whole experience would have been very different.”

What is the Project?

It’s an extreme makeover! This Spring, family volunteers will transform the two existing all-white, institutional bathing rooms into warm, inviting bathrooms––as much like home as we can make them.

Why this Project?

Families and staff want to make bathing a more pleasurable experience for residents in the Upper Terrace. A hospital-like room with unfamiliar equipment can create unnecessary distress. With dementia, it’s hard to see a white tub or toilet against all-white walls

What changes will we see?

  Painted walls
Shower curtains
Furniture-like storage units
Framed pictures
Cozy ‘privacy’ capes for residents
  Brightly coloured towels
Adjustable “gentle” showerheads
Flowers
Sponges to hold
Peaceful music (for those who enjoy it).
