Our Newest Newsletter
Brenda Hubbard, Recreation Therapist in the Lodge, will be publishing
our newest resident newsletter. This newsletter is intended as a medium to
highlight the talents and accomplishments of many of our community members. The
first of this bi-monthly newsletter will be launched in October and features the
outing accomplishments of Geraldine Miller.
Brenda requests the assistance of families in making this venture a success.
Biographical information, rumors, jokes or any stories that will interest our
internal community members, along with written permission to publish these
articles is requested.
Just some of the benefits this newsletter is intended to achieve : life reviews,
a sense of pride and accomplishment, or just keeping current on events or
expressing ones point of view.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING |
Thanksgiving Thoughts
|
The Pilgrims had so little;
Yet they give their thanks
For food & warmth & shelter;
And peace within their ranks
We take these things for granted;
And enjoy them every day—
|
 |
Our Freedom and our families;
And the chance to work & play
So as our prayers are offered;
May we look into our hearts
And thank God for the blessings
That have set this day apart.

As you may be aware, we have
recently had an “Environmental” issue that has resulted in an unpleasant
odour in the Lodge. While offensive, we want to reassure our residents
and stakeholders that everything possible to correct this problem is
being done. We truly regret that finding the source of the problem has
taken some time. During this time, the Regional licensing body, North
Shore Health, and the municipality along with numerous professional
contractors were consulted to make sure that the environment was not
contaminated and our quality compromised.
Due to the nature of the problem, most of the activity to resolve the
issue was taking place in areas which are not obvious to anyone, but
steps are being taken to finally resolve the issue. As of this
newsletter deadline, we have identified the source of both the water
problem and source of the smell. Water apparently has been slowly
leaking from a broken pipe in the old servery hallway and may have been
potentially for a number of years. The slow leak seeped underground and
eventually found its way through the insulation surrounding our basemen
and then into our ductwork-hence the source of the smell. Once the
location of the leakage was identified the following steps were
initiated: the “grey water” was redirected away from the building,
collected in a catch-basin and then pumped out via sump pump into the
drainage system. Secondly, contractors were secured to go in and fix the
leak. This procedure means that we have to open up the concrete in our
new hallway. Finally, we will replace the old ductwork in the
ventilation system and hire a restoration company to clean up the
flooded basement.
Management would like our stakeholders to know that we have been able to
take steps to minimize the impact and are continuing our efforts to
finally resolve this issue. Your continued patience in this matter is
very much appreciated.

Volunteer –Palliative Care Training: a 3-Day Workshop offered at
Inglewood Care Centre
Volunteer Training will be offered to “15” mature volunteers who would
like to learn to become Palliative Care Volunteers for our residents.
Palliative Care training uses the Family Systems model to teach
volunteers to provide compapractical help, and support to dying
residents and their families. Bereavement support and palliative massage
(which provides comfort and relaxation to the individual) will be part
of the training.
Maetel Grant, who trains volunteers for the Lions Gate Hospital
Palliative Care Program, has offered to lead the 3-day training.
All participants will attend all three (3) day-long sessions (7 hours
each day) scheduled for:

After 5 long months, the
opening of the Lodge dining room is cause for celebration! This bright
and spacious room is in direct contrast to its predecessor. It should be
noted that the access and egress area from the main entrance has also
been enhanced by the new hallway. The patio area off the dining room is
scheduled for completion by the end of September and a covered walkway
will offer us shelter from the weather.
Progress is also being made
with the Gazebo in the back garden area. A newly automated door allows
easier access to the Gazebo and light and heat fixtures will provide
comfort during the colder months.
We have contracted the
services of a professional to assist us with the new Lounge space
requirements and finishing details for the new lounge. Much of this work
should be completed by our Annual Open House on December 8, 2005.
