ADMINISTRATOR’S NOTE...

penOn April 8, 2005 the Owners and Management met with family members to give an update on our plans for contracting out care services at Inglewood Care Centre. By the time you read this update you will have had an opportunity on June 24, 2005 to meet with representatives of the company who will be providing these services from August 6, 2005. For those who were unable to attend I’d like to provide some information on our process and introduce the successful company.

We received 10 responses to our Request for Proposal (RFP) for care services. The responses were carefully reviewed and scored using criteria given in the RFP. The three companies who scored highest in the “Quality” category were interviewed to gain further information about their care philosophy, quality assurance programs and similar transitions which they had accomplished. One of our major challenges is to ensure as smooth a transition as possible therefore, we asked each of the companies to provide us with a detailed transition plan. We arranged another meeting with each company to go over these plans. We then spoke to representatives from at least one site that each company is providing services to and followed this up with a site visit.

As a result of our process, we are pleased to announce that Simpe-Q Care Inc. are being awarded the contract for care services at Inglewood. They are committed to providing services of at least the same quality as residents and families are used to and also to increasing the number of care hours by approximately 8,000 per year from the level experienced in Fall 2003.

The three Directors of Simpe-Q are all Registered Nurses; between them they also have extensive experience in long-term care administration, family counseling, training and development, Chinese medicine and business management. Simpe-Q currently provides care services at Windermere Care Centre, a 215-bed facility in Vancouver.

Simpe-Q has already met with existing staff and they are being encouraged to apply for positions before outside applications are considered. It is their aim to recruit as many of our existing staff as possible. All care aides and LPN’s will be required to hold a certificate from a recognized program and be able to meet all requirements of Licensing.

The Management of Inglewood will be meeting daily with Simpe-Q to resolve issues as they arise and we will be holding another evening meeting with families following the transition. I do ask that you give Simpe-Q your support during the transition period and welcome their staff many of whom we hope will be familiar to you.

Another initiative we told you about on April 8, 2005 is the implementation of the Eden Alternative. We now have three of our staff, Ildiko Dudas, Wilma Atchison and myself, trained. We are embarking on a Strategic Planning process that will be built around the Eden philosophy. In my next update I will provide additional information on this; in the meantime, if you wish to find out more about the Eden Alternative and you have access to the Internet, please visit the website www.edenalt.com

A Story of Love…

It was a busy morning, approximately 8:30 am,
When an elderly gentleman,
In his 80”s, presented to have sutures (stitches)
Removed from his thumb.

He stated that he was in a hurry as he
Had an appointment at 9:00 am.
I took his vital signs and had him take a seat,
Knowing it would be over an hour before
Someone would be able to see him.

I  saw him looking at his watch and decided,
‘since I was not busy
With another patient,
I would evaluate his wound.

On exam it was well healed,
So I talked to one of the doctors,
Got the needed supplies to remove his
Sutures and redress his wound.

While taking care of his wound,
we began to engage in conversation.
I asked him if he had a doctor’s appointment
This morning, as he was in such a hurry.

The gentlemen told me no,
that he needed to go to the nursing home
to eat breakfast with his wife.

I then inquired as to her health, He told me
That she had been there for a while and that she was a victim of Alzheimer’s Disease.

As we talked, and I finished dressing his wound,
I asked if she would be worried if he was a bit late.
He replied that she no longer knew who he was,
That she had not recognized him in five years now.

I was surprised, and asked him
“And you are still going every morning,
Even though she doesn’t know who you are?”

He smiled as he patted my hand and said…

“She doesn’t know me, but I still know who she is”

I had to hold back tears as he left,
I had goose bumps on my arm,
And thought, “That is the kind of
love I want in my life”

True love is neither physical, nor romantic,
True love is an acceptance of all that is,
Has been, will be and will not be...

...GARDEN NEWS

Dear Family and friends,

We’re reaching our goal! The Manor Garden Project is almost complete. In addition to the shrubs that many of you have so generously donated, the West Vancouver Parks Board also donated numerous annuals to add just the right amount of colour. How can I possibly convey to you the sheer pleasure that this garden is bringing to so many of our residents. To see one dear soul make a bee-line for a new raised planter and say with delight, "Pansy!" as she patted a dahlia. Others inside, falling over themselves and their walkers to see where the hummingbird had gone. picture

I had a nurse tell me today that the residents are really enjoying the garden, even those that don't normally go out. And they're going out on their own initiative! I have also noticed the difference with the staff -they are getting involved as well...its wonderful. On Tuesdays, when the West Van Garden Club arrives, about 20 residents are out there singing, working and enjoying the space, looking very relaxed.

People have donated time, professional expertise, goods, energy etc. etc., from Boy Scouts who delivered a Christmas tree as the project began, to local garden shops whose 1,000 left over bulbs were planted by Kerry McPhedran and two other women! All that remains, a recognition plaque. We are hoping that you can help us achieve our final goal...

By the end of July, we should have our "Wendy house" of a garden shed in place [Kiwanis members have agreed to help us build] and the annuals in full bloom.  We expect to host our “Open  House “ on Saturday July 24th to celebrate its success with the community. We hope to see you  all there...

Sincerely Yours,

Wilma Atchison , Leisure Services Coordinator
