Warm weather and sunny skies aren’t the only indication that spring has arrived at Inglewood Care Centre—spring flowers are also serious reminders-especially to gardening enthusiasts that the planting season is upon us.
Every spring, the waist –level and patio plots that surround Inglewood are claimed by those residents and their families with a “green thumb”. Under the direction of the Leisure Services staff, avid gardeners meet to discuss what is to be planted and where. A visit to local gardening centers to purchase plants and seeds has tomato plants soon growing alongside petunias and impatiens. For the past 2 years, Inglewood has had the privilege of attracting some enthusiasm and expertise from our community. Visits from the Hollyburn Elementary Peer Buddies each spring help residents in the Lodge weed their plots and the West Vancouver Garden Club come weekly throughout the summer to help Manor residents do garden care. Bedding plants can be set out after the May 19th weekend. Preparation for hanging baskets can also get started. Much to the delight of our Terrace residents, the presence of hanging baskets and accessible gardens made conversation and visiting a pleasure. Families and friends who see themselves contributing some plants, can take this idea even further by offering to “adopt” and care for “your” plants by watering and deadheading –an enjoyable task when family member and residents take it on together. Feel free to contact a member of our Leisure Services Team.

| | In light of the recent outbreak of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), we have taken every precaution to ensure the health and well being of residents, staff members and visitors. As part of these precautions we are asking all persons who have traveled to Asia or Toronto over the past two weeks and recently returned to Vancouver to refrain from visiting Inglewood Care Centre and stay at home for a minimum of seven to ten days. The incubation period of this disease (the time during which symptoms will appear if you are infected) is 7-10 days; therefore we are asking people to remain at home until 10 days have passed since their return to Vancouver.
This self-quarantine is very important for the health of the individual as well as the residents and staff of Inglewood. In addition, if you have relatives visiting from Asia and/or Toronto or you are planning to travel to Asia or Toronto, please inform our Nursing staff or the Infection Control Office, Ildiko Dudas. Finally, we ask that you kindly apply good personal hygiene and wash you hands with soap and water before and after contact with other individuals. If you wish additional information on SARS, pleas refer to the websites below:

Canada celebrates National Volunteer Week from April 27 to May 3rd. This years
Theme is “The Value of One– The Power of Many”, which celebrates the spirit and energy of our volunteers. One person’s individual actions can make a significant difference. We would like to say “thank-you” to our current roster of 86 community volunteers, our resident volunteers and the 13 members of Inglewood’s Family and Community Advisory Board. In 2002 our community volunteers averaged 161 visits and donated 243 hours per month. We welcomed 42 new volunteers last year. I would like to introduce two new volunteers. Mandy’s friend and fellow volunteer, Ian, plays the guitar for her. Jennifer has chosen to assist the recreation staff with various programs, the Monday Tuck Shop, and in-house ,medical appointments. Again thank you to all our volunteers and friends who assist us in many ways.
