A Message from the Inglewood Family/Community Advisory Board

penThe Chair’s Pen...
At a meeting sponsored by the Inglewood Family/Community Advisory Board on January 30th, Team Leaders made a presentation on “Ways of Working Through a New Admission to Inglewood Care Centre”. Those taking part included Wilma Atchison (Leisure Services Coordinator), Lisa Feghali (Social Services), Karen Holt (Assistant Director of Care), Jocelyn Macdonald (Nutrition Services), and Ildiko Dudas (Director of Care). The purpose of this education session was to give families a context for which to understand how the process works, and how decisions are made. This included an understanding of the licensing bodies that regulate those decisions. Topics that were discussed by Team Leaders were: Working with staff, Nursing Basics, Helping your family member settle in, Dietary basics, When visiting, Leisure Services, Working with Dementia, and Taking care of yourself.

From time to time the Board arranges for meetings designed to provide families and caregivers with helpful information with news of developments at Inglewood and with an opportunity to meet the owner and senior staff and ask questions about any aspects of the facility which they may have. The feedback received from those attending our last educational session was it was extremely informative, including our long-time families. It has been suggested that we repeat this session in the future…

Tell me...I’ll forget

Show me...I may remember

But Involve me...and I’ll understand

Moyra Jones, OT

We believe that recreation, leisure and play are inherent and significant aspects of the human experience as they promote quality of life and wellness at every stage of development. Further, we believe that individuals of all abilities have the right to benefit from leisure and recreation. We go beyond entertainment to engage...

The Leisure Services Team at Inglewood Care Centre strives to meet this commitment in any number of ways. With the use of recreation or music, we try to improve physical or cognitive abilities, increase independence and enhance well-being. We encourage participation in 1:1, small group and global programs which promote health and growth through rewarding leisure and recreation experiences. We try to maintain connections with our community through “caring ministry” visits, volunteer programs and scheduled community outings.

The ultimate goal of Therapeutic Recreation is to empower people to achieve their full potential through positive leisure lifestyles...

We’d like to also share with you who the practitioners of our Leisure Services team are. Besides being graduates of recognized college programs, members of their professional organizations, they collectively share a wide variety of skills and abilities that add to the quality of services they provide for our clients.

While Monica has any number of interests she brings to us, we have benefited from two particular skills –her ability to nurture our valuable volunteers and promote our fundraising efforts...

Alison Netherwood has been with Inglewood in 1983. She is currently completing her certificate in Recreation at Douglas College this summer. In the past 2 years Alison has complete her Fitness Theory and Physiology and Dementia Care at Vancouver Community College. Alison love of animals is largely the reason our clients have a close and continued contact with animals and plants. Many an outing has included trips to her riding stable to see her horses…
