ADMINISTRATOR’S NOTE

Summer is finally here and we are well underway in terms of preparing the outdoor grounds once again for the enjoyment of our residents, families and other visitors. You may have noticed Larry outside over the past several weeks power-washing all of our large outdoor decks, as well as the pathways in behind the Lodge and the smaller patios off of our ground floor resident rooms. Several other personnel have also been working outside cutting the grass, weeding, pruning, etc. With five acres of grounds to address, this is no small task and we appreciate your patience and cooperation while we continue with these efforts.

Some additional patio furniture has also been purchased and placed in our main patio areas for the enjoyment of all those wishing to sit outside and enjoy the nicer weather. While we encourage all of residents and families to take full advantage of our outdoor patios and grounds during the nicer weather, please remember to limit your exposure to the sun and drink plenty of liquids.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind all residents and staff who are smokers to please smoke only in designated smoking areas. This is required under West Vancouver Fire Regulations and is essential towards ensuring the safety of all our residents, families and staff. Your attention and cooperation is particularly important at this time of year when the sun and heat dry can dry out the foliage throughout the grounds and create a high risk of fire.

Finally, please be aware that Inglewood’s ownership group, management team, staff, volunteers and community partners have been working hard over the past few months to prepare for our accreditation review scheduled for Spring 2005. As part of these efforts, we have recently reviewed and updated Inglewood’s Mission, Vision, Core Values and Leadership Model to reflect the changes that have occurred over the past four years. These updated documents are in the process of being posted throughout the facility and we welcome any comments, questions and feedback.

Respectfully submitted,
Ian Woodcock
Administrator

Breaking news! We are confidant that we can reduce our original budget of $65,000 by a considerable amount, thanks in part to contributions in kind and savings in construction and contracting. But we still need your help!

Look for the revised budget in the August issue of the Herald.

Why this Garden? There is beauty and comfort in a garden. Your donation will create a welcoming, safe retreat for residents, families and friends. This wheelchair-accessible garden is professionally designed to give pleasure to all–including those many residents with dementia.

Puzzles Wanted!

We are looking for 500 piece puzzles for resident activities. If you or someone you know has puzzles they would like to donate or exchange, please contact Wilma at 913-4732 or drop them off in the Lodge recreation.

Volunteer News June 20, 2003

Wishing all A safe and happy Summer!

I wish to welcome and introduce our five (5) new volunteers to the Inglewood Community.

à Cyndy and her dog “Meika” come to us from St. John Dog Therapy and are visiting on Wednesdays after lunch.

à Wanika and Heidi are both high school students. They will be looking after the Tuck Shop on Mondays from 4:00 to 5:00, and doing some one-to-one visiting.

à Lois is doing one-to-one visits.

à Kristen will begin volunteering in July and will be assisting the Recreation Staff throughout the facility with various programs.

This time of year we say goodbye to many of our volunteers. Some have graduated from high school, will be working or traveling during the summer, and going off to university in September. Others will be taking a summer break and returning next fall. Thank you for sharing your time, talents, and energy with us.

A special thank you to Phyllis Gaul is in order. She is retiring from the Community and Advisory Board after eight years of service. Phyllis originally became a volunteer in 1987, and always had the residents’ best interests at heart. She was an active voice—an advocate who devoted time and energy to the help make Inglewood a centre of excellence. We will miss seeing her, and wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

Thanks to all our families and volunteers
for contributing to the Inglewood Community!

Susan White-Bona
Coordinator of Volunteer

Resident Survey of Food & Food Service

In June, a survey was conducted with randomly selected residents from the Lodge & Manor. Improvements were noted in all areas compared to the results of the Fall 2002 survey.

Residents report that: they are enjoying their meals, they find the food tasty and flavorful, they are aware of the menu board, they are being offered a second choice and they get enough to eat. Those residents that reported needing assistance said that they received it. Our standard is 80% satisfaction.

While the attractiveness of how the food is served on the plate met the standard, comments indicated that more attention could be made to plate presentation. Temperature of the hot foods and dining room service fell slightly below standard. Residents commented that the dining room was too crowded and the staff were sometimes too loud. They also wanted more dining staff.

Chicken dishes were cited by many as being a favourite and by a few as being the least favourite. Other favorites included: the breakfasts, soup, rice pudding and the new curried chicken dish and bread pudding, which were resident suggestions from last survey. Least favourite items included roast beef, peas & carrots, meatloaf and gravy. Residents would like to see more fresh fruits, more green salads, more vegetables and more variety in the sandwiches.

These results are promising, given that the survey was conducted 6 weeks following the switch in the main meal from the evening to midday. Staff comments and plate waste audits find residents are eating better at both meals and are able to eat more independently at both meals.

Things we will be working on to improve Resident satisfaction:

Ensuring the hot food is consistently hot, especially the porridge.

Advocating for the timely expansion of the Lodge dining room.

Monitoring the level of staff voices in the dining room.

Educating on the importance of plate presentation.

Review of meatloaf and roast beef recipes.

Review of gravy recipes and portion served.

Continuing to try to find ways to make fresh fruit more available to residents.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS:

Residents want more fresh fruit. Two challenges are: that most need help cutting it up in order to eat it, and fruit baskets no longer work because many residents put the fruit in their bedroom drawers and forget to eat it. We put out a request many months ago for volunteers to serve fruit once a week to the residents. We have had no takers. If you are up to the challenge, please contact Susan White-Bona, Volunteer Services Coordinator, at 604-913-4730. It would be a much-valued service.
