An informal photograph of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, taken in 1854 at Buckingham Palace. Married in 1840, Queen Victoria conferred the title of Prince Consort on Prince Albert in 1857. Although he had no formal legal or constitutional powers, Prince Albert had a powerful impact on the monarchy both through his influence and his encouragement of the arts, science and industry
