Happy 1_clr.gif (4403 bytes)0_clr.gif (4609 bytes)3_clr.gif (4628 bytes) rd     Birthday Mrs. Whitley

Elisabeth Whitley was born in Wales, in April 1896. Her father owned a brewery and she grew up with brothers in a loving but strict family. She grew into a beautiful young lady, about 5' 8" tall and   willowy, with brown eyes and brown shoulder-length hair, and was high spirited and adventurous. For a few years after schooling was completed, she worked as a secretary in a real estate office, which she enjoyed very much.

Elisabeth WhitleyThe term "sexual harassment" had not been invented yet and consequently, as she tells it, there were a lot of fun and games going on in the office and everyone had a good time. Naturally, she received several proposals of marriage, but she had her heart set on one intelligent, handsome local boy named Jack, who studied engineering. Jack thought his future was in North America and he emigrated in the 1920s and landed in San Francisco. According to Elisabeth, letters went back and forth until one day the fateful letter arrived........."Do You Want To Marry Me"........and she cabled back - "YES". Shortly after she sailed to San Francisco, after bidding farewell to her family and friends, and the old country.

Jack was standing at the pier in San Francisco with an armful of flowers, a hotel reservation for two single rooms, and  an engagement ring. The following day they found a Justice of the Peace and were married before nightfall. They had the happiest marriage.

They bought a lovely house with a big garden, traveled a lot, mainly by car, as Elisabeth accompanied her husband on most of his business trips. Elisabeth loved gardening and cooking, she kept house while Jack was at work. She loved reading and entertaining their friends and several times they visited Wales and England. After Jack retired they settled on Vancouver Island because fishing was good. Jack liked fishing while Elisabeth was sitting in the boat reading. She was always interested in politics and world affairs. Up into her 90s she subscribed to the Economist, Times, Newsweek and National Geographic. Now her eyesight is failing and she walks through the garden of her mind.

Elisabeth Whitley was born on April 22, 1896. She admitted to Inglewood on April 12, 1996 after a short stay at Lions Gate Hospital. Initially she stayed at Inglewood's ECU and transferred later to SCU in September 16, 1997. Elisabeth is known for her strong voice. She has a lovely Welsh accent and a merry wit, with which she engages her care attendants, Bruce and Rick, who can hold their own.

She is particularly fond of sweets and a cup of tea, and spinning stories of old. A real dear for 103!

Congratulations and best of wishes on yet another birthday, from all your friends on Special Care Unit.
