Aileen Slater was born “Aileen Grubb” on February 9th, 1899. She was born “at home”, which was the family’s homestead situated overlooking Active Pass on the shores of Galiano Island.

Aileen was one of seven children born to Robert and Ethel Grubb during their pioneering years on Galiano Island. The Bluffs of Galiano Island which are often photographed from B.C. Ferries traveling through Active Pass, were “officially” named Grubb Bluffs in time for Aileen’s 100th birthday last year. She enjoyed “unveiling” a large photo of Grubb Bluffs during her Birthday Celebration.

The Grubb family moved to Victoria in 1905 for the further education of their children. Aileen lived in Victoria until 1949 when with her husband Bill and daughter Daphne, she moved to the Prairies for 5 years. They lived in both Winnipeg and Calgary before settling in West Vancouver in 1954.

During Aileen’s school years in Victoria, she particularly enjoyed music and sports. She played the piano and first violin in the school orchestra and was captain of the girl’s basketball team. Her “single” years were spent as a secretary working at the Parliament Buildings and for the armed forces in the early years of World War II. Her recreation time was spent camping, canoeing, swimming, and playing tennis and badminton.

Aileen now takes pleasure in her family, which consists of her daughter, son-in-law, 5 grandchildren and their spouses and 13 great grandchildren.

Aileen moved to Inglewood Lodge from her home on Sentinel Hill in August 1999. Now experiencing her 3rd Century, she is thankful for the good health with which she has been blessed for most of her 101 years.

The District of West Vancouver has issued an invitation for these two women to have their official signatures placed in the British Columbia Book after the Premier and Lt. Governor. The British Columbia Book is one of many millennium provincial projects.  The Book, which will travel throughout the province in 2000, gives every British Columbian the chance to sign their name and, literally, make their mark in history.  The 2X3’ book will feature a special cover, as well as paper that will last another 1,000 years.  The official signing will take place at the West Vancouver Memorial Library on Friday, March 3, 2000 from 1:30 - 3:00 PM.
