Time Left Until Year 2000

None - All went well

Y2K_clock.gif (5161 bytes)Well, will the world's computer systems crash on January 1, 2000, plunging nations into widespread chaos? Or will minor glitches mar a few desktops when computers read the date as 1900?

The What Bug?!?
You know--the Y2K bug, a.k.a. the Year 2000 bug or the millennium bug. Here's how it works: many computer systems use software that tracks dates with only the last two numbers of the year, such as 97, instead of 1997. When 00 comes up for the year 2000, many computers will view it as 1900 instead, potentially leading to failures in business, transportation, utilities, and other services. How will it affect you? Read on to find out.

First, Inglewood has done everything to move into the new millennium. We have purchased new computers and software and completely integrated into a network. The heating system has been upgraded and tested for the year 2000 and our generators are all in perfect working order. Elevators will be in operation and our suppliers have guaranteed us that we will receive supplies as usual. At present, Inglewood is reviewing proposals for a new telephone system which not only comply with Y2K but will bring Inglewood's communication system into the future.

By now, you've probably seen the scare stories about the year 2000 (Y2K) bug. Reports on the event have appeared in major newspapers and magazines, as well as on the nightly news. Some of the stories about the millennium bug would have you believe that it will cause airplanes to fall from the sky, ATMs to shut down, and Social Security checks to bounce. Some of the stories about the millennium bug would have you believe that it will cause airplanes to fall from the sky, ATMs to shut down, and Social Security checks to bounce. My personal opinion is that we will enter the Year 2000 with no major problem. We will wake up on January 1, 2000 and make our usual "New Years Resolutions", which few of us will keep, I speak from my own experience, and life will go on as always. There might be some minor problems, but they will be taken care off in a very short time.

Y2K BombBut while the Y2K bug is real and the risks of inaction are considerable, people who are actually working on the problem say that the myths and exaggerations about Y2K have overshadowed the reality. Despite--or, perhaps, because of--all the hysteria, most large institutions are aware of the problem, and they're working on it. In nearly every case, they expect the bug to have little or no effect on core functions. So why are so many loud voices warning of an apocalypse? Why are so few stepping forward to say that Y2K is no big deal?

Unlike many computer bugs, this one is easy to explain and even easier to dramatize. And let's face it: the world going haywire makes a much better story than a few bigger-than-normal utility bills and problems with the accounting database at work. Millennial superstition also plays a part. One
