My deepest sympathies to the family, friends and co-workers of Kety Straat
I’ve known Kety since 1995. She was the most honest, trustworthy, caring, loyal, respected and loved person I’ve ever known. I’ve rarely had a friend as true. She made me laugh. She made me think. She was my Dr. Phil. She was our “mother goose”.
Be with the angels Kety. Rest in peace. The night sky is so dark this week. But, I know you won’t be able to resist bringing your own special twinkle and sparkle to your now higher ground. I’ll be watching the stars Kety and expecting your usual unsurpassed holiday decorating to continue.

My sincere thanks to all the staff, managers and volunteers who yet again made our Residents’ Open House a success. It was a fun time and a beautiful memory to keep. This party, along with the other seasonal festivities that Inglewood provides, such as Canada Day, is among my favourite days of the year. I get such joy in these moments where we put aside the “health care” relationships of our job and just have a normal everyday experience. And what an experience! The display of food was spectacular, the baron of beef was melt-in-your-mouth tasty, the entertainment was lively & peaceful at the same time, the residents looked great decked-out in their formal wear, and a quiet hum of conversations and laugher filled the place. It was great!
To me, this year’s festivities were mixed with bittersweet emotions, as it will be the last year we see many of the faces of our Support Services staff. I was so proud of all the staff (care, recreation, dietary, housekeeping and maintenance) in the way they pitched in to help and dressed for the occasion. I am especially proud of the support staff. With so much of the focus of the evening being on the delicious meal, they could have easily given just a minimum effort. But, they didn’t. They went all the way…100%. They said they did it for the residents.
I also wish to thank the families and residents who expressed their appreciation of the event and their recognition of all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into such an event. Such as pot-washing, making sure the place was clean and all spruced up and making sure that the residents had that little added touch of make-up. Many favourable comments were received on the outside lighting.
And thank you to the Lower Terrace family members for your help in the set-up, clean up and in-between stuff. I spent most of my time in that area that evening and you gals are great. As always, you help foster a family atmosphere. Every bit helps and your help went a long way especially after a night in healed shoes. We all appreciate your on-going help, commitment and camaraderie.
To the Unicare Executive Team – thanks for sponsoring such an elaborate evening. I know of no other facility that puts such emphasis on providing residents and families with a top-quality special holiday party.
To Herb and Kety and Wilma – what can I say? “Simply the best!” Same time next year? J

And the best part after playing with the tomato is that it is salted by the sea water and ready to snack on.
The nutrition page is very informative. I like the slogan "One Day at a Time". It makes nutrition goals easier to achieve.

Outstanding site Herb!!! There's something for everyone.
I was reviewing our dietary FAQ in preparation for the Family Education Night and I came upon a heart wrenching story called "The Final Touch - Margaret" at http://www.inglewoodcarecentre.com/other/margaret.htm that fit perfectly into the theme of new admissions. Holiday histories are in-depth and useful. The currency converter is very convenient. I just noticed a link to the NSHR's Food Safety newsletter. I also enjoy re-reading stories of our residents and remembering them.
I get email from people who find the site and it struck me that your site is providing a valuable community service. I'm also now realizing the opportunity I have, through this site, to voice reliable nutrition information.

Hey, I enjoyed your info. I wonder if you would happen to know how the Turkey got to be so closely associated with Thanksgiving, to the exclusion of other main dishes? I know they had fowl at the first Thanksgiving, but they also had eel, apparently. So do you know???
